Practice is NOT about...
Learning the new piece
Fixing things

Practice IS about..
Making things easier
Developing good habits

When something is difficult..(do all 3)
1. Break it down into the smallest unit. (e.g. rhythm on open strings)
2. Play at the slowest possible speed
3. When it works, repeat it 5x

Review!
A child does not have to be at the edge of their incompetence to be growing in development (i.e. the new piece). If your newest piece is Gossec Gavotte, play Lightly Row 3 times beautifully. Growth can happen if it is played well.
